Council for Educators Level 1 introduces educators to council – a circle, listening, speaking, awareness, relationship practice – and prepares them to begin using the practice in their classes and schools. The training is experiential, participatory, fun, profound, and infinitely relevant and useful. “Best training ever!” and “I’ve never been in a professional development like this before!” are comments from recent participants. The training covers the history and basics of council, the variety of different types and formats of councils, and some of its many applications in schools, including as the foundation for a restorative justice approach to discipline. It explores how to create councils based on the social-emotional, intellectual, and academic interests of the group and provides participants practice planning and facilitating councils so they return to their schools prepared to give it a whirl facilitating circles with their students, colleagues…and others.

Council for Educators Level 2

2 Day Training – 8:30am-4:00pm both days

Council for Educators Level 2 is for educators who have taken the Level 1 training and are facilitating councils in their classrooms and/or with school staff. Working from participants’ experiences, this workshop explores the realities of sustaining a council practice – how to keep it fresh, engaging, and responsive. We reflect on our facilitation and leadership styles, looking at where we get stuck or flip into “default” mode and how we can expand our capacity and awareness. We also look at how to vary the forms and modes of council to fit group needs and keep the practice vital, how to support the emergence of student and participant leadership, how to sustain and expand the practice among staff, parents, and community members, and how to deal with immediate and pressing issues within the classroom and school community.

Restorative Justice for Educators Level 1

2 Day Training – 8:30am-4:00pm both days
Choose dates/link below to register

Restorative Justice for Educators Level 1 provides an introduction to restorative justice concepts and trains educators to use restorative interventions to resolve conflicts, address disciplinary issues, and build a more capable, engaged, and resilient school community. This training explores the similarities and differences between RJ and council and prepares participants to use both practices to provide a cohesive approach to the full spectrum of social-emotional learning – from joy, commonality and play to conflict resolution, accountability and problem-solving. Participants learn five restorative intervention formats, all based on a common set of “guiding questions.” Because each format provides a different degree of intervention, conflicts and disciplinary issues can be addressed with the lowest degree of intervention – and the least expenditure of time and resources – necessary. This tiered intervention approach has the added benefit of helping students become increasingly capable of resolving conflicts on their own.
